My Kids Interview Barbara Techel, Author of Frankie the Walk ‘n Roll Dog

Posted by laughingstars - June 26th, 2009

On Monday, I reviewed this terrific picture book.

Here, Barbara Techel fields questions from 10-year-old James and 5-year-old Trishy.

Have you always loved dogs? Did you have any dogs when you were a little girl? What kinds were they and what were their names? What other pets did you have when you were a kid?

I have loved all animals since I can remember! The first animal I remember having is a little orange tabby striped kitty named Tiger. Also had a poodle named Pixie and a black lab named Toby.

For the first 10 years I was married I had lots of cats; Conway, Tigger, Tucker, Dani, Jezebel and Sally. But I really wanted a dog and then I got my chocolate lab, Cassie Jo and then Frankie. I also have my yellow lab, Kylie.

Did you always want to be a writer? Did you write stories when you were a kid?

No, I can’t say I always wanted to be a writer. I’ve always enjoyed writing. I especially liked writing letters and poems to family and friends. I don’t recall writing stories as a kid. But I do remember my English teacher in 8th grade who inspired me to write.

Did you like to read when you were a little girl? What were your favorite books? What are your favorite books now?

I do believe so! I’m not always good at remembering when I was little. But I do recall loving Charlotte’s Web and Pippy Longstocking. My favorite books now are anything that is inspirational or non-fiction and of course, I love to read dog and animals stories.

Does Frankie like to play?

Frankie LOVES to play. I think sometimes people think because she is in a wheelchair that she can’t play anymore. But she does just about everything she used to do without the wheels. Nothing stops her!

Who did the illustrations for the book and how did she make them? They look like they were done with computer graphics?

Her name is Victoria Kay Lieffring. She grew up in the same town I live in. She is a very creative, talented young lady. And you are so right! They were made on the computer with Adobe Photoshop. She is currently working on Frankie’s 2nd book for me. Wait until you see it! It is called, Frankie, the Walk ‘N Roll Therapy Dog Visits Libby’s House. It will be out early 2010.

  1. Thank you James & Trishy for asking such great questions! I hope you will continue to enjoy Frankie’s book for a long time to come. Always remember you can deal with any challenge that comes your way by having a positive attitude. Frankie told me to tell you this: “Always be positive and keep on rolling!” Arf-a-roo!!
